Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid

I was working with a client who was job searching recently, and I asked her for her cover letter so we could edit it.

Her response? "Oh, I don't have one."

Me on the inside: 😨😱😤😮😥

Me on the outside: Ok, so what have you used for your previous applications?

Her: I don’t apply to positions that require a cover letter

Me:

Apparently, she just hadn't applied to any jobs that required a cover letter because she didn't want to write one.

You probably know where this is going already but if you don't, let me summarize - we created a cover letter and she started getting interview offers.

I recently surveyed over 30 recruiters and 62.5% of them said that cover letters are an important piece of the applicant's packet.

Employers read cover letters.

And honestly, you want them to! They are a great way for you to showcase your fit for the role in a unique way.

Cover letters are an important part of my work with helping clients in the attainment phase of their career search.

A cover letter is a letter of introduction that highlights your fit for a specific position.

Having a cover letter is important because it gives you an opportunity to add context about your career story to your job application, context that might not necessarily be easy to share in a resume.

The cover letter is your chance to paint a clear picture for the employer about how you are qualified for the job you are applying for.

Your chance to take the most relevant experiences listed on your resume and link them directly to the skills and knowledge you’ll need to be successful in the role you’re applying for.

In today’s video, I’m sharing what exactly a cover letter is not and mistakes for you to avoid so that you write an effective cover letter.
